Halofantrine Treatment of acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria in infants and young children

چکیده
Introduction Malaria in very young children is a major therapeutic challenge in highly endemic areas where initial infection can occur in the first few months of life. Because active immunity has not begun to be established, infants are most at risk from falciparum malaria, and it has been estimated by the World Health Organisation that up to 1096 of all infant mortality in Africa is directly or indirectly attributable to malaria. The rapid progression of symptoms from patency to severe and complicated malaria means that the time for intervention may be very short, and effective and appropriate antimalarial drugs are frequently in short supply. Added to this, malnutrition and other illnesses may accelerate the process, and in recent years drug resistance has further complicated the picture.

Clinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Quinine in Children
Quinine is the best studied drug for treating severe malaria in very young children. Quinine may be administered in pregnancy and, at therapeutic doses, malformations have not been reported. Some strains of quinine from Southeast Asia and South America have become resistant. Quinine is the treatment of choice for the drug-resistant severe Plasmodium falciparum. The antimalarial mechanism of qui...

Malaria is an infection sustained by three parasites namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium ovale. Plasmodium falciparum is the most common and virulent parasite. These parasites are present in different areas of the sub-Saharan African countries and Asia. In 2010, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 660,000 deaths and, approximately, two-t...

Abstract Background Malaria is an acute and chronic illness characterized by paroxysms of fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, anemia, and splenomegaly. Most malarial deaths occur in infants and young children.Anemia in malaria has diverse pathophysiologic mechanisms such as direct invasion of Red cells, In the following, we presented comparison of hematological aspects: children with Malaria an...
متن کاملHalofantrine in the treatment of falciparum malaria.
50 patients (45 males + 5 females) suffering from acute uncomplicated attack of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria were treated with 1500 mg of halofantrine divided in three doses of 500 mg each given at an interval of 6 h. Results showed there were no primary treatment failures. Average Parasite Clearance Time (av. PCT) was 51.12 h and average Fever Clearance Time (av. FCT) was 31.25 h. Advers...

In 2010, there were estimated 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 666,000 deaths and two-thirds were children. Children are more vulnerable than adults to malaria parasites. In sub-Saharan African countries, maternal malaria is associated with up to 200,000 estimated infant deaths yearly. Malaria is caused by five Plasmodium parasites namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasm...
